Design WEEK 2007

Click here to download the Design Week brochure pdf

Design Week 2007 is a week long celebration of Irish and international design. The main
purpose of Design Week is to highlight the important contribution good design makes to the
cultural and economic life of Ireland through fostering a reputation for creative excellence
and innovation. By concentrating a large number of design events over the short period of
a week in November the aim is to focus attention on a selection of the best design activity
throughout Ireland and also highlight the work of a number of major international designers.

Design Week is an umbrella brand and works in partnership with a wide network of
Irish design organisations and representative bodies. These range from professional
design bodies, creative enterprises, design companies and studios, 3rd level design
colleges and paper and print suppliers. The basic idea for Design Week is quite simple;
a range of partnership organisations agree to stage an event or series of events around
the time of Design Week providing an exciting snapshot of a very eclectic Irish design
scene. A key feature of this year’s programme is the huge increase in the number of
events happening throughout the island of Ireland. Numerous lectures, exhibitions,
film screenings, conferences and workshops are taking place in Cork, Belfast, Kilkenny,
Carlow and Limerick and we hope this trend will spread to other centres in Ireland.

Design Week is still a young event but this year’s programme with over 60 individual
events shows just how much potential the week has and how, in the coming years,
it can help enhance Ireland’s reputation for creativity and innovation.

Anthon Beeke, Graphic Agitation
Anthon Beeke is arguably one of the Dutch design greats. This retrospective exhibition explores the posters and graphic design work of Anthon Beeke and how he has used them to make statements. Both controversial and world-renowned, this work has the ability to excite.

‘What I find most important in a poster: that it’s a means of communication, it can make people angry, you can use it to stir up a debate. That’s when the medium really works. It’s the sort of power I have from time to time - a power that’s granted me by clients. I’m not always provoking, that would reduce the tension. You have to measure out the indignation and anger, not walk around toting a red hot poker all the time. If you do that, you’re nothing but a pain in the neck’. Anthon Beeke.

Worlds Designed For Everyone
In an exhibition designed to showcase the best in online and product design, the Irish Design for All e-Accessibility Network is hosting an interactive user centric exhibition around the greatest design challenge of our day: how to make a design usable to everyone, including people with disabilities.

Many of the designs we interact with every day can be improved in a way that includes more people. Something as simple as a well placed security card reader can enable someone in a wheelchair to enter a building unaided.

This exhibition showcases the best in accessible and user centric design, showing what is
possible when designers focus on giving everyone the ability to interact with their designs.

As well as demonstrations of new virtual and real technologies, there will be dynamic presentations by leading figures in the world of interactive design, from education to computer games to architecture. There will be video installations and a chance to interactively create your own music using novel technology.

Sticks [ Fine Furniture ] present We are sticks. Design meets craft
Nik O’Donnell and Andrew Burdock graduated from NCAD in 1999 with B.A.’s in Industrial Design. In 2004, Nik and Andy created Sticks, a unique bespoke design company that reflects
their shared passion for innovative contemporary furniture and quality without compromise.

“Our aim in setting up Sticks was to create bespoke, innovative furniture in which the initial concept could develop - fluently and organically - right through the manufacturing process. It’s all about interpreting a brief through the prism of our own style so that the finished piece accurately mirrors our clients’ needs – and the pleasure we took in creating it. This show is our take on that grey line between design and craft”

Design on Film: HELVETICA

Due to technical difficulties beyond our control, the delivery of Helvetica has been delayed. In some cases therefore other features have been substituted. Please refer to our website for the latest programme updates!

Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. Helvetica screened this week at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, TX where it was very well-received. In a million years it would never have occurred to me to do a documentary on a type font. The film makers somehow came up with the idea of doing a cultural history of the Helvetica font which has become the almost universal default modern font over the past 50 years. Fonts are almost like the air we breathe. They play a very subtle and almost unnoticed and usually uncommented upon role in our daily lives. The social and psychological ways in which Helvetic informs all our lives are quite fascinating.

Helvetica is a humorous film that combines a series of interview clips with a variety of often rather quirky graphic font designers with shot of various street signs and corporate logos. The film provides a great deal of insight into the role of the Helvetica font in shaping Western culture. Helvetica is both entertaining and informative in that it provides great insight into a ubiquitous aspect of modernity about which most of us are completely oblivious. I hope that many people get the opportunity to see this unusual and insightful film, because it opens a fascinating window for better understanding our society. Since versions of Helvetica are also the default font on most computers, many of us type in Helvetica constantly without even realizing it.

Dubbel Trubbel
Two controversial Dutch designers spanning two different generations present their work and
discuss their creative challenges. Anthon Beeke’s designs have always generated controversy,
from his 1969 alphabet composed entirely of naked women, to his notorious 1980 poster for
Shakespeare’s Troilus and Cressida, and his work retains its impact and importance today.
Jochem Leegstra is founder of ..,staat, only in existence for 7 years their creative force is young
and strong. Often straddling the boundaries of the design and advertising scenes, ..,staat see
creativity as a platform. They believe they can apply their vision and creativity to any subject
and judging from their client list, they’re not the only ones. This is a must see event.

Design Futures
What is design? The last decade has seen the answer to this question alter fundamentally. Designers are no longer seen as mere stylists, adding ‘sprinkles’ to a finished product.
Increasingly involved at every stage of the idea process designers now lead, and often alter, the path projects take. As the barriers between disciplines dissolve the role of the designer is changing, designers embracing multidisciplinary approaches and moving freely between specialisms. Three leading thinkers from the field of design Adrian Shaughnessy (‘How To Be a Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul’, Intro), Andy Stevens (Graphic Thought
Facility) and Andrew Summers (Design Council) cast light on an industry that is undergoing fundamental change.
