DESIGNYARD exhibitions: Seamus gill - silversmithing "25 years on"

Opening hours: 9am - 6pm Monday to Saturday, Sunday 11 am - 6pm

DESIGNyard have the privilege of hosting a retrospective exhibition of one the top master craftsmen in Ireland. The Show opens the 2nd of November. Seamus's works are beautiful sculptural forms that would enhance any contemporary interior.

The 25 pieces in the exhibition are based on the true art of silversmith. It is a purely decorative art without any of today's fashionable conceptual sides. Silversmith is part of a lineage of craftsmanship that goes back to the Bronze Age. The functionality of many of the pieces is in keeping with the traditional use of silver in the home. All pieces are based on a love of the medium of silver and a love of what the material can do. The forms are made by cutting a shape from a flat sheet of silver, then with the skilful use of hammers moving, stretching and compressing the metal into an elegant three dimensional shapes. Look carefully and you can work out that each piece started by being cut from a flat sheet of silver. This exhibition explores some of the "series" that Seamus has worked on over the last number of years. Each series explores a particular design aesthetic or technique, but they often overlap.

Seamus been commissioned by many of Irelands leading companies such as Guinness, Coca Cola, Philips, Aer Lingus, Super Quinn, Toyota, Vodafone, Nokia, Irish life and Permanent, AIB, Bank of Ireland, His work has been presented to many business leaders, sports stars and head of state.

Seamus Gills work has been purchased for the permanent collection of the National Museum of Ireland, The Irish Assay office and the Department of Foreign Affairs.
