PUBLIC LECTURE IN DUBLIN BY INTERNATIONAL AWARD-WINNING DUTCH ARCHITECT, WINY MAAS, ANNOUNCED

Lecture sponsored by Hamilton Osborne King

The Irish Architecture Foundation and Hamilton Osborne King are pleased to announce details of a public lecture in Dublin by 2005 Marcus Prize winner, Winy Maas of MVRDV Architects from Rotterdam.

The free Loving Architecture lecture will take place at the Gaiety Theatre on Thursday, November 9th at 6pm. With seating capacity of 1,200, this will be the highlight of Design Week 06, which this year highlights the cutting edge of Dutch design.

Winy Maas and his architecture firm MVRDV have received international acclaim for many projects including the Silodam Housing complex in Amsterdam, the Matsudai Cultural Centre in Japan and the Dutch pavilion at Expo 2000 in Hannover. MVRDV was selected last year as the first winner of the $100,000 Marcus Prize, a biannual award for emerging architects established by Milwaukee’s Marcus Corporation Foundation. “We really were looking for a person or group that was on a trajectory to greatness,” says Bob Greenstreet, who is Dean of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee school of architecture and City Planner of Milwaukee.

This is the second in a series of Loving Architecture lectures promoted by the Irish Architecture Foundation and sponsored by Hamilton Osborne, market leader in Irish and international property. “Last year we sponsored a lecture by Pritzker Prize winner Thom Mayne and previously we sponsored one by Daniel Libeskind. Both of those events were a tremendous success with each attracting over 1,000 attendees. Irish architects and property developers are keen to hear about new ideas from acclaimed international designers and we are very happy to support these lectures as we feel they will contribute to raising the standard of architectural design in Ireland” says Paul McNeive, Managing Director, Hamilton Osborne King.

Shane O’Toole of the Irish Architecture Foundation says: “Winy Maas and MVRDV are among the most thought-provoking architects at work today. Currently building on three continents, they see no limit to the architect’s area of activity. As well as construction projects, their output includes polemical exhibitions, films, software and books, all of which make MVRDV as much a research organisation as an architecture practice.
