Frank Ryan Bursary
The Frank Ryan Travel Bursary Award for 2009 was made to Kevin Callaghan, a BA (Hon) 4th year student in the Crawford College of Art and Design, Cork Institute of Technology.
Kevin used his bursary to travel to, Jingdezhen, Peoples Republic of China to attend a pottery workshop.
Kevin first learnt about the residency at the Experimental Sculpture Factory and Pottery Workshop, Jingdezhen from a slide show given by Gus Mableson, the director of the Ceramics Skills and Training Course with the Crafts Council of Ireland. Kevin instinctively realised that a trip to the Sculpture Factory and Pottery Workshop would be a foundation on which to inspire future work as he is very much influenced by Asian architecture and calligraphy.
The work produced during the workshop has already been on public exhibition in Jingdezhen and has been featured in an exhibition in the Glucksman Gallery University College Cork.
The Bursary allowed Kevin to not only broaden his design experience through travel and exposure to international design but also enabled him to work with other designers from all over the world who had travelled to China to broaden their ceramic design knowledge.
Kevin’s award has provided another example of how the Frank Ryan Travel Bursary work’s to broaden Irish Design by enabling Irish Designers to travel abroad to gain international design related experience.
