The Frank Ryan Bursary, established by the Institute of Designers in Ireland (IDI), recognises Frank Ryan’s contribution to design education and is an IDI commitment to celebrating excellence and exploration among emerging designers in Ireland.

About
The Frank Ryan Bursary is a travel bursary that funds a design student (or students) wishing to pursue an international educational opportunity or a design project overseas. It is not a design competition.

Award
A single award of up to €5,000 will be made annually.

Eligibility of Applicants
The bursary will be awarded to a full-time design student of demonstrable ability who wishes to participate in an approved international educational programme, attend an international design event, or develop an agreed course-related project that requires overseas travel.

Definitions
Design student: a student registered on a full-time course in any IDI membership category in a college recognised by the Higher Education Authority.

Full time: in any year of study while registered on a full-time course.
International / overseas: outside the island of Ireland.

Purpose of the Travel
The purpose of travel should be one of the following:

To participate in approved international educational programme (a course or seminar that is in keeping with the course of study being taken by the applicant and that will add depth to the applicant’s overall education and/or will strengthen the applicant’s expertise in the chosen area);

To attend an international design event (an exhibition, conference or similar that is relevant to the candidate’s course of study and that will add depth to the applicant’s overall education and/or will strengthen the applicant’s expertise in the chosen area);

To develop an agreed course-related project (a project devised by the applicant or employment or work experience relevant to the applicant’s course of study in a company or organisation abroad).

Application and Adjudication
Applicants must submit a written proposal describing:

    1. What international travel activity you propose to undertake and an explanation of the need to travel.
    2. The knowledge you will gain and how you will apply or use it.
    3. What the benefit would be to your course of study and your future career.
    4. Why you should be granted the award.
    5. How you intend to deploy the money.


Proposals on the official application form only will be consider. The application must include the name and contact details of the students tutor from whom a reference maybe sought.
The adjudicators will evaluate applications on the basis of the quality of the argument set out, the logical thinking applied and their view of the benefit to the applicant’s career objectives. The adjudicators’ decision will be final.

The award will be paid on the understanding that the winner will submit an illustrated report showing how he/she has benefited from the travel. This report and/or illustrations may be used by the trustees in connection with the future promotion or development of the bursary.
